You can get to Lake Como from Milan in many ways.

It all depends on your travel needs, such as the town that you wish to visit, your departure point (the city of Milan or its airports) and your means of transport.

Here I will give you an insight on how to get to Como, Bellagio and Varenna, three of the most popular Lake Como’s towns.

How to get to Como from Milan

The city of Como is very easy to reach from both the city of Milan and its airports.

Here is how to get to Como:

Get from Bergamo (Orio al Serio) to Como

Travel tip

Once you are in Como, you can easily get to the towns of the southwestern branch of the lake (such as Cernobbio, Argegno or Nesso) by bus service or boat.

How to get to Bellagio from Milan

If you want to travel from Milan to Bellagio, the Pearl of Lake Como, you have several options. 

Here is how to get to Bellagio:

From Milano Centrale train station

Take the train to Lecco (check timetables on trenord.it) then, when you are in Lecco, you can choose between the D10 bus to Bellagio or, only in summer, the public boat service.

From Milan Malpensa airport

Get from Malpensa to Como by train, then take the C30 bus to Bellagio or use the public boat service (all year).

From Bergamo (Orio al Serio) airport

Take the train to Lecco (check timetables on trenord.it) then, when you are in Lecco, you can choose between the D10 bus to Bellagio or, only in summer, the public boat service.

From Milan Linate airport

First of all, you have to get to Milano Centrale train station (you will find several shuttles, such as Autostradale, outside the airport).

Then take the train to Lecco and, once there, you can take the D10 bus to Bellagio or, only in summer, the public boat service.

Travel tip

Once in Bellagio, you can easily get to the towns of the central part of the lake (such as Varenna, Tremezzina or Menaggio) by boat.

How to get to Varenna from Milan

Getting to Varenna, one of the most loved Lake Como’s towns, is very simple.

Here is how to get to Varenna:

From Milano Centrale train station

There are several trains that can lead you to Varenna from Milano Centrale - check timetables on trenord.it - thanks to the efficient railway service on the eastern branch of Lake Como. Your journey will last approx. 1 hour.

From Milan Malpensa airport

Malpensa -> Varenna is quite a long ride.

First of all, you have to take the Malpensa Express from the airport to Milano Centrale train station.

Then, from Milano Centrale you can take another train that will take you to Varenna.

From Bergamo (Orio al Serio) airport

Take the ATB bus just outside the airport and get to Bergamo train station, where you can take the train to Varenna.

From Milan Linate airport

If you land at Linate airport, first of all you have to get to Milano Centrale train station (you will find several shuttles, such as Autostradale, outside the airport).

Then, from Milano Centrale you can take another train that will take you to Varenna.

Travel tip

Once in Varenna, you can easily get to the towns in the central and northern part of the lake (such as Bellagio, Menaggio and Gravedona) by boat.

From MILAN TRAIN STATIONS to Como

Milano Porta Garibaldi - Como S. Giovanni

The Suburban line S11 operated by Trenord starts from Porta Garibaldi, one of the most dynamic areas of Milan, and gets to Como in one hour.

Como S. Giovanni, your arrival point, is 12 stops from the start of the line. Once out of the station, you will be just a five minute walk from the most beautiful lake in the world!

Milano Centrale - Como S. Giovanni

Milan central station, just a couple of M2 subway stops from Porta Garibaldi, is definitely where most travelers start their journey to Como.

The route has fewer stops than the other options: after leaving from Milan central station, the train will only stop in Monza and Seregno before getting to Como S. Giovanni!

Milano Cadorna - Como Nord Lago

Milano Cadorna is another of the major train stations in Milan. If you want to get to Como from Milano Cadorna, simply take the train that goes to Como Nord Lago (end of the line) and you’ll be there in one hour.

Once out of the station, Lake Como will be the first thing that you’ll see… and it’s gonna be amazing!

From MILAN MALPENSA AIRPORT to Como

If you’re landing at Milan Malpensa airport, you have two options: renting a car or getting to Como by public transport. Here’s how to get from Milan Malpensa airport to the city of Como!

From Malpensa to Como by car

If you rent a car at the airport, simply follow the directions toward Como/Chiasso.

Take the new A36 motorway (Pedemontana Lombarda) and continue for approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles).

Turn right and take the A9 motorway toward Como/Chiasso. When you’re driving on the A9, continue north until you reach the Como Centro exit.

Train from Malpensa to Como

Want to reach Como from Milan Malpensa airport by train?

Malpensa Express is an efficient service offered by Trenord, and it’s the best way to get to Lake Como from Malpensa airport.

The train starts from both terminals and gets to Saronno train station in about 20 minutes, then you have to change and take the train which heads to Como Nord Lago.

Ticket price for both routes is €10.90 (€8 for Malpensa Express and €2.90 for the Saronno–Como route, operated by Trenord).

From BERGAMO (ORIO AL SERIO) AIRPORT to Como

Bergamo airport is one of the most popular destinations for a low cost trip. The airport is actually located in Orio al Serio, a small town that is fifteen minutes away from Bergamo and about one hour from Milan. 

If you’re landing at Bergamo (Orio al Serio) airport, you have two options: renting a car or getting to Como by private and public transportation.

From Bergamo airport to Como by car

If you rent a car at the airport, simply follow the directions toward Como/Chiasso (your journey will last approximately one hour).

Moving by car is a good option if you land at Bergamo airport and want to save time and enjoy your holidays to the fullest.

Transfers from Bergamo to Como

If you don’t want to travel by car, just outside the airport you will find several companies that will take you to Como from Bergamo.

Here are some companies that can take you from Bergamo to Milano Centrale train station:

Orio Shuttle

Right outside the airport, you can take the Line 1 of the Orio Shuttle which connects Bergamo airport to the Milan central station in about 50 minutes, at a cost of €7 (€6 online).

Service is guaranteed seven days a week. Once in Milano Centrale, you can get to Como by train (see above).

Airport Bus Express
 

Airport Bus Express by Autostradale is another private shuttle service which connects Bergamo airport to Milano Centrale in 50 minutes.

Ticket price is €6, but you can save €1 if you also buy the return ticket.

From MILAN LINATE AIRPORT to Como

Milan Linate airport is located in the eastern periphery of the regional capital and represents the arrival point of most international flights.

From Milan Linate to Como by car

If you rent a car at the airport, you should head for Milan and take the A51 motorway (Tangenziale Est). Then, take the A9 motorway toward Como/Chiasso and follow the directions.

When you’re driving on the A9, continue north until you reach the Como Centro exit.

Transfers from Milan Linate to Como

If you don’t want to move by car, you can rely on the Starfly bus service, which connects the airport to Milan central station in 15 minutes. You can buy your ticket on board at the price of €5.

From Milano Centrale, you can get to Como by train
